ICD Coding
International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a system of diagnostic codes for classifying diseases. It is published by the World Health Organization, and used world-wide for morbidity and mortality statistics, and reimbursement systems. The ICD is revised periodically, and is currently under its 10th revision, ICD-10. On January 1, 1999 the US adopted ICD-10 coding for mortality reporting (death certificates). The transition for clinical morbidity coding was slower. The American medical system officially transitioned from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM on October 1, 2015. Use caution when using data based on ICD coding which spans these dates.
ICD coding for morbidity and mortality differ slightly, but both are based on a hierarchical structure, where major categories of diseases are grouped together.
