Fall 2016 marked the first time the FAFSA was available starting October 1. The revised FAFSA timeline, as well as new rules allowing filers to use prior tax information, have provided an opportunity for a strong, collaborative push across Tennessee to empower as many students as possible to access funds they need to attend postsecondary institutions.

Tennessee Higher Education Commission, Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation, the Tennessee Department of Education, tnAchieves, Southwest Tennessee Development District’s Regional Economic Development Initiative (REDI) and the Ayers Foundation have collaborated to create a campaign to increase statewide FAFSA filing rates called TN FAFSA Frenzy.

TN FAFSA Filing Rates by County and High School

The 2018-19 FAFSA cycle is underway. These visualizations will be regularly updated to reflect FAFSA submissions by county and high school for 2017-18 high school seniors. The baseline data in these visualizations reflect FSA FAFSA submissions as of June 30th 2015, 2016, and 2017 and TN Promise FAFSA submissions as of the TN Promise FAFSA filing deadline in each year.

An overall FAFSA filing rate is provided using the US Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid Office data and the Tennessee Department of Education’s 12th grade membership file (Average Daily Membership), as of October 1st. Each FAFSA submission rate is calculated by dividing the number of FAFSA submissions by the number of 12th grade students enrolled in the high school. A TN Promise FAFSA Filing rate is calculated using Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) data. TN Promise FAFSA submission rates are calculated by dividing the number of TNP FAFSA submissions by the number of TNP applicants in high school. These rates will differ because TN Promise applicants and student membership do not perfectly overlap.
