Textbook Services & Instructional Services
The State Textbook and Instructional Materials Quality Commission is responsible for recommending an official list of textbooks and instructional materials to the Tennessee State Board of Education (SBE) for approval. Once the SBE has approved a list of textbooks and instructional materials, it is the responsibility of local boards of education to decide which textbooks and instructional materials to use in their districts.
The department administers and coordinates the bidding, reviewing, listing, adoption and approval process for textbooks and instructional materials used by Tennessee schools. The department also implements the rules, policies and procedures established by the Tennessee Textbook and Instructional Materials Quality Commission regarding textbooks and instructional materials.
Official List of Textbooks and Instructional Materials
A listing of approved textbooks and instructional materials by content area is available from the Tennessee Book Company.
It defines the upcoming subjects that will be up for bidding in the state textbook adoption process. It also indicates the timeline for standards proposed to state board, when the review occurs, when textbooks are adopted locally, and the contract term period.
A schedule outlines the major dates associated with that section’s adoption period. It includes commission meeting dates, state board meeting dates, and important dates for reviewers and publishers for the section currently underway in the adoption process.
A “draft” schedule is one that has not been approved by the Textbook and Instructional Materials Quality Commission.
A section is an identifying letter indicating which subjects are included in the textbook adoption process. Letter “A” began in 2014. Prior to 2014 sections were referred to with roman numerals.
