English Learners

Tennessee students speak more than 140 languages, and it is the responsibility of the educational system to ensure all of these students are appropriately supported in their English language development and in their progress toward mastering the academic standards for each grade level and content area.

The information on determining if a new students is an English language learner and determining English learner services for transition/exit is currently being updated based on the new state board policy 3.207.

All English Learners (ELs) will be required to have individual learning plans (ILPs) beginning in the 2018-19 school year, as noted in state board policy 3.207. In support of the forthcoming statewide implementation of ILPs, the department has developed a bank of resources designed for district and school administrators and general education and ESL teachers.
