OBION – The town of Obion is getting some improvements with the help of the carpentry class from NWCX.  So far, the class has poured concrete for new sidewalks at Obion City Hall and the city park.  They will also pour concrete for the Veterans Memorial and have been asked to make updates to the community center once plans have been finalized.

Instructor John Spence said the work not only helps the city of Obion, but it also allows the students to get more experience in the trade.  “So far we have been working on this project about a month,” said Instructor Spence.  “The city has also asked us to work on their community center, and we are waiting on the plans for the remodel before we get started on that project.  So far, the guys have learned a lot on this project.”

A NWCX Carpentry student said, "It has been good to work on projects for Obion.  We are all out here learning a trade, and if one of us isn’t sure what to do we help each other out.  We have also been getting positive feedback from the community and they come by and tell us how much they appreciate the work we are doing.  It makes us feel great and the work is that much more rewarding.”

“We have asked for help from the prison before and they have assisted us with a lot of projects,” said Public Works Director Randy Evans.  “These are a good bunch of guys and they work hard to help the city.  We would definitely use them again for future projects.”
