ONLY – At approximately 4pm today, 16 inmates caused a disturbance in a housing unit at Turney Center Industrial Complex.  During the course of the disturbance, three officers were assaulted.  Two of those officers were removed from the unit immediately, while one was held hostage for a period of time.  TDOC’s Special Operations Unit responded and regained control of the unit.

All three officers were taken by helicopter to a local hospital.  Commissioner Tony Parker says, “Our thoughts and prayers are with these officers.  Any threat to the security of our institution or threat to our staff will be investigated and charged appropriately.”

Turney Center Industrial Complex is currently on lockdown while the Office of Investigation and Compliance investigates the disturbance.  The inmates involved in this incident will be immediately moved to a maximum security facility.

Turney Center Industrial Complex houses approximately 1,500.  The security designation is close and the majority of beds are medium security.
