Lower Hatchie NWR

Approximately 18 miles SW of Hening, TN near the mouth of the Hatchie River, Lauderdale County, TN

Site Directions:  Take TN Highway 87 west from Henning, TN almost to its end (about 18 miles).

Look for a refuge sign on the south side of the highway and follow the road at the sign into the refuge.

Landmarks: Fort Pillow State Historic Park is located nearby.

Site Description: The site contains a variety of forested and non-forested habitats and impressive access to Mississippi River riverfront and sandbar habitats.

There are 5280 acres of bottomland hardwood forests, 922 acres of upland forests, 1278 acres of croplands, 665 acres of grasslands, and 887 acres of marsh.

A boat launch provides access into a floodplain lake surrounded by tupelo gum trees.

Wildlife to Watch:  
Concentrations of shorebirds and wading birds may be observed. Waterfowl are abundant in winter, but a spotting scope is recommended. 

Forested areas contain a wide variety of species and area grasslands provide opportunities to observe grassland species not seen elsewhere. 

Endangered Least Terns can be seen in summer nesting on sand bars. Swallows congregate in large numbers in July and August.
