Melton Hill Dam and campground

Site Directions: The dam and campground is located just north of I-40 at exit 364. Travel north from I-40 for less than a mile and turn right following signs towards the dam.

Hours: daylight hours (unless you are camping)

Seasonality: year round

Fees: none, except for camping

Site Description: The dam area has multiple access areas to the river, above and below the dam.  There is a 0.9 mi trail through mixed pine and hardwood forests.  There are nice viewing areas of the lake from the campground.

Wildlife to Watch: In winter, look for waterfowl and Bonaparte's Gulls.

The pine woods of the campground have Brown-headed Nuthatches.

General woodland birding is good year round. Bald Eagles may be seen year round.

Wild Turkeys can be heard gobbling across the lake in spring.
