Assistant Commissioner Rick Shipkowski
Rick Shipkowski is the Assistant Commissioner for Homeland Security with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. Prior to becoming Assistant Commissioner, he served as the State of Tennessee’s Homeland Security Director and Deputy Director.
Rick retired from the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2002; after 23 years of service. During his military career, he served in a variety of command and staff positions while assigned to airborne, special forces, and air assault units in the United States and overseas. Rick has an extensive plans and operations background, closing out his military career as the Strategic Planner for the 101st Airborne Division, FT Campbell, Kentucky.
His civilian education includes a Master’s of Science Degree in Administration from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biology from Florida Institute of Technology. He also is a graduate of the US Department of Homeland Security Executive Leaders Program.
Rick lives in Montgomery County and he and his wife Sue have three children and five grandchildren.
