Investigator - Consumer Protection Division

The Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter represents all State executives, officials, departments, boards, agencies, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties. Such representation includes participation in litigation, transactional matters, and giving day-to-day legal advice to a wide variety of State entities. The Attorney General's Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 17 legal divisions within 5 sections.

About the Consumer Protection Division

The Consumer Protection Division engages in the full range of consumer protection, including data privacy, deceptive advertising, antitrust, advertising substantiation, financial disclosures, government imposters, and price gouging, among others. The Division works closely with consumer protection enforcers from other states and the federal government on matters of regional or national impact – including, most recently, serving in the leadership of the national opioids settlement negotiations, holding Meta accountable for the mental health harms its Instagram platform causes to young users, as well as antitrust suits against Google and Apple.

Job Summary:

The Tennessee Attorney General’s Office is seeking applications for the position of investigator. This position would work primarily with the Consumer Protection Division in civil investigations and litigation involving deceptive conduct and unfair trade practices.

Qualifications:

The desired candidate will have five or more years of experience conducting complex civil or criminal investigations. The candidate will also have experience conducting fraud investigations, white collar crime investigations, and/or investigations of businesses or other large organizations. The candidate should be able to demonstrate an ability to successfully take an investigation from the initial stages through resolution. The candidate must be a team player and be able to work closely with the guidance of an attorney and to work with other legal staff.  The candidate must be available to work occasional extended hours and travel with little notice. The candidate will have strong time management and organizational skills; the ability to develop multiple investigations at the same time; and a desire to protect consumers and resolve complaints.

Preference will be given to those candidates who possess a degree in accounting or a related discipline or a Certified Fraud Examiner designation or similar certification.

Duties Include:

Managing all aspects of investigations

  • Interviewing complainants, victims, and witnesses;
  • Researching background of individuals and case issues;
  • Preparing reports;
  • Collecting evidence and organizing and maintaining case files;
  • Using various sources of information to conduct investigative work assignments;
  • Providing testimony in court;
  • Conducting surveillance activities; operating and monitoring a variety of devices used in surveillance of suspects, such as cameras, recorders, etc.;
  • Developing relationships with other law enforcement; and
  • Participating in investigations with other state, federal and local law enforcement agencies, and other interested parties.
