Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) is an evidence-based strength, balance and fitness program for adults 65 and older. Performing exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness are the single most important activity that adults can do to stay active and reduce their chance of falling.
The entire curriculum of activities in the SAIL program can help improve strength and balance if done regularly. SAIL classes are offered 2-3 times a week as a one-hour class, and the exercises can be done standing or sitting.
“We strongly encourage you to watch our SAIL Leader Orientation video to learn even more about the programs history, requirements and expectations for the program. For more information on trainings or becoming a SAIL Leader, please contact Sidney Schuttrow at 615-741-1585 or Sidney.Schuttrow@tn.gov
The SAIL program was developed as a result of the Senior Fall Prevention Study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and coordinated by Washington State Department of Health and NorthWest Orthopedic Institute. The result of the study showed that seniors who attended SAIL exercise classes at least 2-3 times per week for one year decreased their falls by 26%.
In Tennessee, the Knox County Health Department started the SAIL program in 2013; the program has since expanded to many counties in East Tennessee. On July 1, 2018, the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability received a falls prevention grant from the Administration for Community Living (ACL) to increase SAIL classes across the state, focusing on implementation in rural counties that do not have existing evidence-based programs.
Become a SAIL Leader
In order to expand the SAIL program, we are looking for volunteer leaders to teach the SAIL program in their area. Training to become a SAIL Leader is free and materials to start the class will be provided once a SAIL site is established. We strongly encourage all volunteer leaders to be trained in teams of two. To qualify to be a SAIL Leader you must:
- Hold a current fitness certification or equivalent degree (check here for approved list)
- Must be CPR certified (Hands-on component required)
- Be willing to teach 2-3 SAIL classes a week
For more information on any of these trainings or becoming a SAIL Leader, please contact Sidney Schuttrow at 615-741-1585 or Sidney.Schuttrow@tn.gov
Upcoming Leader Trainings
TCAD is actively working to schedule SAIL trainings in various locations through the state for 2020. Check back periodically for additional opportunities. For more information on any of these trainings or becoming a SAIL Leader, please contact Sidney Schuttrow at 615-741-1585 or email@example.com.

According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults. One in four Americans age 65+ falls each year. SAIL is a program that will help you become stronger and balance better, thereby also helping you prevent falls and remain independent.
