Tennessee Home of Your Own Initiative

During 1995-2004, the Council created a “Home of Your Own” demonstration project to increase home ownership for Tennesseans with developmental disabilities. Banks and lending authorities were educated on supporting homeownership for people with developmental disabilities. During the project, 132 people bought their own homes, 73 people moved from congregate settings to the community, 185 units of affordable and accessible housing were made available, and 240 individuals with disabilities received training on home ownership.

Today, home ownership for Tennesseans with developmental disabilities is a common occurrence. It is recognized as a good option for families planning for the future needs of their family member with a disability. A success stories booklet was also developed as a part of this initiative.
