News Programs on Employing People with DisabilitiesPartnership with Dept. of Labor and News Channel 5+
In fall 2015, the TN Department of Labor and Workforce Development began a collaboration with News Channel 5+ Network to present a monthly series of programs focusing on employment issues and opportunities for businesses in Tennessee called "Inside Workforce Development."
The Council sponsored the March 2016 program, in honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, on employment for people with disabilities. The program focused on the value that employees with disabilities can bring to the workplace. The three guests interviewed during the show were the current Council Vice-Chair Tommy Lee Kidd discussing his expectations for his daughter with a disability to have a job when she's an adult, Dept. of Education’s Joey Hassell discussing the new occupational diploma option for students with disabilities, and Kate Copeland, an employer at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital who hired an employee with a disability after they completed the Project SEARCH program.
We sponsored a second program in Oct. 2017 to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month, featuring Council Vice-Chair Serina Gilbert, a talented young employee with a disability who is thriving in her job, her supervisor who helps her succeed, and the Chief Operating Officer at HealthStream who discusses how employers benefit from providing opportunities to jobseekers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
