Community Supports and Services

The Council has funded and been a leader in a number of projects related to improving community supports available to people with disabilities and their family members. The goal of many of these projects was to enable an individual with a developmental disability to exercise self-determination, be independent and included in their community, and to support their families.

Initiatives range from leading an effort to train service providers to use "person-centered practices" to launching a "microboard" association where people with disabilities receiving services are trained to hire and manage their own staff, with appropriate supports, to establishing a support network for brothers and sisters of individuals with disabilities.
