Polk County was formed in 1839 from
Bradley and McMinn counties
(Acts of Tennessee 1839-40, Chapter 10).

The county seat is Benton.

There were fires at the Polk County
courthouse in 1895 and 1935.

NEWSPAPERS ON MICROFILM 

Newspapers were published in Benton, Copperhill and Ducktown. Scattered early issues are available from 1858, and a complete run begins in 1890.  Microfilms are loaned to Tennessee libraries.  Individual reels may also be purchased.  An Inventory of Newspapers on Microfilm at TSLA is available on our web site.
