Employment Background Checks
All applicants for positions with TBI will be thoroughly investigated, including contacting former and current employers, references, acquaintances, and neighbors, as well as reviewing school, credit, arrest, medical, and military records. A complete background investigation is assessed before a final decision on employment is made. The background investigation takes from two to six weeks to complete. Special Agent positions also require full physical and psychological examinations.
State Employee Benefits
Full-time employees earn annual and sick leave monthly based on the length of time they are employed with TBI. There are 11 paid holidays, a flexible benefits plan, 401(k) matching program, and higher education fee discounts and waivers available to employees and their families. There are a variety of benefits provided to TBI employees through the state. They include health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, long-term health care insurance, and optional special accident insurance.
Basic Criminal Investigation School
The TBI Agents’ school, administered through the TBI's Training Division, is called Basic Criminal Investigation School and is required for all newly-hired Agents. Additionally, TBI Forensic Scientists may also participate. During BCIS, Agents learn about TBI policy and procedures and train to conduct a variety of investigations, including everything from murders to public corruption. The agents are also required to live on campus Monday through Friday for the duration of their training, to maximize their experiences in classroom lectures and practical field exercises.
