AN ACT To name a certain bridge in Memphis in honor of Bishop G.E. Patterson.
WHEREAS, It is fitting that the elected representatives of the State of Tennessee should name certain highways and bridges to honor those exemplary citizens who have contributed immeasurably to the growth and prosperity of their respective communities; and
WHEREAS, Bishop G.E. Patterson of Memphis is most assuredly one such remarkable public servant who has worked assiduously to improve the quality of life for his family, his congregation and his fellow citizens and their progeny; and
WHEREAS, This General Assembly wishes to provide a lasting tribute to Bishop Patterson's bountiful life of purpose and commitment; now, therefore,
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, the bridge that spans the Wolf River on Interstate 40, near the intersection of Warford Street and Jackson Avenue, in the City of Memphis is hereby designated as the "Bishop G.E. Patterson Bridge" to honor and recognize this worthy gentleman's numerous valuable contributions to his church and his community.
SECTION 2. The Department of Transportation is directed to erect suitable signs or to affix suitable markers designating such bridge as the "Bishop G.E. Patterson Bridge".
SECTION 3. The erection of such signs shall be within the guidelines prescribed by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
SECTION 4. This act shall become operative only if the federal highway administrator advises the Commissioner of Transportation in writing that the provisions of this act shall not render Tennessee in violation of federal laws and regulations and subject to penalties prescribed therein.
SECTION 5. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
