Governor Phil Bredesen Joins THP to Remember Fallen Troopers

MEDIA ADVISORY - Trooper Memorial Ceremony to Honor Officers Killed in the Line of Duty

Nashville, Tennessee --- Governor Phil Bredesen will join Tennessee Department of Safety (TDOS) Commissioner Dave Mitchell, Attorney General Robert Cooper, former Governor Winfield Dunn, Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Colonel Mike Walker, THP Command staff, active and retired Troopers, legislators, and survivors of fallen officers to remember the 38 Troopers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The annual Trooper Memorial Ceremony is scheduled to be held Friday, May 16, 2008, at the TDOS headquarters, located at 1150 Foster Avenue in Nashville.

The service will include a roll call of fallen officers, a 21-gun salute by THP’s Special Operations Unit, bagpipes playing Amazing Grace, and a special flyover by THP helicopters with one peeling off the formation to represent “the missing man.” The service coincides with National Police Week, May 11-17, and Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is May 15.

The Tennessee Department of Safety's mission is (www.tn.gov/safety) to ensure the safety and general welfare of the public. The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.
