Tennessee Highway Patrol Cadets Report for Training Jan. 30

January 18, 2005

58 Men and Women Selected for Upcoming THP Trooper Cadet Class

Nashville, Tennessee --- On January 30, 58 men and women will report to the Tennessee Department of Safety Training Center in Nashville for the start of the Tennessee Highway Patrol's 2005 Trooper Cadet Class.

The THP Trooper Cadet academy is an intensive 16-week training session that will prepare the new recruits for the duties and responsibilities of a state Trooper. The class, comprised of 51 males and seven females, represents 54 counties throughout Tennessee.

"I am confident we have selected a qualified group of candidates for the upcoming Trooper class," said TDOS Commissioner Fred Phillips. "Through extensive education and instruction, we will equip each with the skills necessary to protect the citizens of Tennessee."

The cadet training class consists of a highly specialized curriculum that covers all areas of law enforcement for which the Tennessee Highway Patrol is responsible. All courses, consisting of both field and classroom instruction, are taught by skilled THP personnel who evaluate each cadet's performance through written and physical examinations. The cadet school will culminate with graduation ceremonies in May 2005.

"It's critical we provide each recruit with a comprehensive education," said THP Colonel Lynn Pitts. "After completing the 16 weeks of training at the Academy, each recruit will posses the solid foundation required to perform the duties of a state Trooper."

The highly sought after Trooper positions garnered applications from thousands of men and women statewide. The selection process included civil service examinations and extensive interview screenings. Final applicants were required to pass a physical agility test, background investigation and psychological and medical examinations.
