Reissue after Reinstatement
- Can I monitor my status online?
To monitor your status online, continue checking under View reinstatement requirements/pay reinstatement fees. When all requirements for reinstatement of driving privileges are met, your status will change to Eligible for a valid driver license, Valid, or Expired.
If the status changes to "ELIG" or "EXPIRED", as long as you are not revoked, suspended, or cancelled in another state, you can reissue your license online or apply for a valid driver license at a Driver License Service Center. You must show proof that you are a U.S. Citizen (certified birth certificate or U.S. Passport), two forms of identification (such as social security card or work ID), two proofs of residency current within the last four months (such as utility bill, W-2, etc.), and pay a driver license fee to obtain a valid driver license. If you have not held a valid license in the last five years, then you will be required to take full test.
If the status changes to VALID and you do not have a driver license in your possession, you should take the same type documents listed above and apply for a duplicate driver license.
- What forms of payment can I use to pay for my reinstatement fees?
You may use either a MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit card or a check card that has the MasterCard or Visa logo on it. You cannot use prepaid cards.
- Can I change my name online?
No. To change your name you must bring the original certified legal document that authorizes the name change (i.e. marriage certificate, court order, adoption decree, etc.) to a driver license station for a new license/ID with your new name, signature and photo. If it is not time for you to renew your license the cost for the name change and a new license/ID is $8 (or $12 if this is not your first replacement during this renewal cycle).
- Can I make partial payments?
You are not required to pay the full amount at one time. The "Total Amount Due" on the payment page is the amount you still owe. You may return to the Web application to continue making payments. Please note that your driving privileges will not be reinstated until you have paid the entire amount due.
- Where should I send my other requirements?
The fax number to send other requirements is (615) 242-3480
- Does this mean that my license is reinstated?
Your driving privileges are not reinstated until your payment AND all other reinstatement requirements have been processed by the Department of Safety.
- Who do I contact with other questions?
Visit the Dept. of Safety Financial Responsibility Web site at http://www.tn.gov/safety/financialresponsibility.htm.
- Why don’t I have an option to reissue my license?
If you do not have an option to reissue your license after reinstatement, then you are not eligible for reissue. You cannot be reissued a license after you’ve been revoked/suspended until you have fully satisfied all of your requirements to reinstate your license. This includes any fees, required documentation, and time served for the duration of the suspension/revocation.
