The Department of Human Resources has recently changed their application process. Basically, state positions will now fall into two categories, either "open" or "announced" examination. If a position falls under the open examination listing, you may make application at any time. However, if a position falls under the announced examination listing, you must wait until the position has been announced on the Department of Human Resource's Web site and only make application at that time. Please visit www.Tennessee.gov/dohr for complete and detailed instructions regarding this new process.

The Tennessee Department of Revenue provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, marital status, or status as a covered veteran in accordance with applicable federal state and local laws.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS A REGISTER?
A register is a list of persons eligible for appointment to a position within state government. There are several different types of registers that may be requested. A "unit promotional" register will list applicants within a specific divisional unit. A "departmental" register will list applicants located within a particular state department. A "statewide" register will list applicants working within state government, and an "open" register will list all applicants determined qualified for the position.

HOW IS IT DECIDED WHICH TYPE OF REGISTER IS REQUESTED?
Management within the area where the vacancy has occurred make that decision. Many times a "promotional" or "departmental" register is requested for higher level positions in order that those employees with requisite knowledge within a department or divisional unit are considered first. Open registers are requested when management wishes to interview candidates from both inside and outside state government.

AM I GUARANTEED AN INTERVIEW IF I AM ON A REGISTER?
No. Many registers are quite large, some with more than 100 candidates. Civil service requires that candidates selected to fill positions may only be chosen from the top three or five (depending on the type of register) candidates requesting an interview, so many times only a portion of the register may be requested.

HOW LONG WILL I REMAIN ON A REGISTER?

The Department of Personnel will use your education and experience or education, experience and test examination score to rate you for a position. If your score on a register was derived from rating your education and experience, you will remain on the register for two years. If your score on a register was derived as a result of rating your education, experience and test examination score, you will remain on the register indefinitely or until the examination is revised or replaced.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF I AM STILL ON A REGISTER?
You may contact the Department of Revenue's Human Resources office at (615) 741-2828.

CAN I BE REMOVED FROM A REGISTER?
Yes. If you fail to respond to an invitation to interview within the seven-day time period, your name will be removed. In addition, your name will be removed if you have been considered and passed over three times for a particular position.
