Who is required to be licensed?

Any person, firm, or corporation operating or conducting any motor vehicle race on any permanent race track or other place for the holding of a motor vehicle race upon which motor vehicles of any description are raced.

How do I obtain a license?

Submit a complete application (found on this site under forms and downloads) accompanied by a $100 fee, $75 of which shall be returned to the applicant if the license is refused; and proof of insurance for the general public with minimum limits of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident or $300,000 combined single limit.

10-14 business days if all requirements have been met

An exam is not required.

I have a licensed track in another state and want to operate in Tennessee. Do you have reciprocity agreements with other states?

We do not have any reciprocal agreements.

How do I renew a license?

Renewal applications are mailed to the licensee’s address 60 days prior to the expiration date of the license. Submit the application in the envelope provided with the fee indicated on the form.

How far in advance of expiration date should my renewal be completed?

All race track licenses expire on December 31 of each year.  Renewal forms and the $100 renewal fee may be submitted anytime prior to the expiration date.  To allow our office the processing time we need, your renewal should be submitted at least two weeks prior to December 31.

I let my license expire. How do I have it reinstated?

If a license is not renewed prior to its expiration, a new application will be required.

How do I retire my license?

A license cannot be retired.

I recently updated my status. Why hasn’t my status changed online?

Your status will change online the business day after it is processed and approved by our office.

Am I required to notify the department if I change my address?

A license application must be submitted for each location.  However, two (2) tracks on the same premises shall be required to obtain only one (1) license for the whole premises and shall not be required to obtain a license for each track on the premises.

Am I required to notify the board if my track status changes?

If a race track is no longer in business or operation, the current license may be returned to the board office by mailing the license certificate along with a written explanation of "voluntary surrender."

How do I know when and where the program meets?

The Race Track Licensing Program does not have appointed members that meet regularly.  If a special meeting is required, a notice will be posted on our Web site.
