How do I obtain a license?

The following conditions must be met in order to obtain an apprentice license:

1. Complete 80-hour approved auction education program
   
   
2. Retain a copy of the application for your records.
   
   
3. Complete and submit to testing company (PSI):
   
   
1. Application for apprentice license
2. 80-hour qualifying education certificate
   
   
4. After receiving notice that you have successfully completed the apprentice exam, remit the appropriate fees to the Tennessee Auctioneer Commission for issuance of your apprentice license. You may begin your apprenticeship upon receipt of your license.

You may begin practicing as an auctioneer upon receipt of your license and proper affiliation with a licensed auction firm.

Requirements for auction firm license, for a firm owned by a licensed Tennessee Auctioneer:

1. Complete application
2. Escrow account form, completed by bank
3. Submit payment of license fees to the Tennessee Auctioneer Commission. For fee schedule, please refer to application.
4. Auctioneer acting as principal, if not the owner, must hold a current Tennessee Auctioneer license and sign the application.
   
   

Requirements for auction firm license, for a firm not owned by licensed Tennessee Auctioneer:

1. Retain a copy of the application for your records.
2. Complete and submit to testing company (PSI):
   
1. Application for firm license
2. Escrow account form, completed by bank
3. Proof that owner or company sponser has 30-hour qualifying education certificate
4. Firm owner's high school diploma or GED certificate
   
   
3. Submit payment of license fees to the Tennessee Auctioneer Commission upon owner or sponsor passing the Non-Auctioneer Firm Exam. For fee schedule, please refer to application.

   2. Certificate of proof for 30 hours of qualifying education

Requirements for obtaining a public automobile auctioneer license:

1. Applicant must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age

Requirements for obtaining a public automobile auction license:

Owner must be licensed in Tennessee as a public automobile auctioneer or must have a Tennessee public automobile auctioneer as principal. Application must be completed and submitted to the Tennessee Auctioneer Commission along with proof of the following and total license fee:

1. Letter of compliance with local ordinances from the local zoning authority
   
   
2. Garagekeeper's legal liability insurance in the amount not less than five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000)
   
   
3. Surety Bond of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) issued by a licensed bonding company
   
   
4. Financial statement prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles by a certified public accountant or public accountant dated not earlier than twelve (12) months prior to the date of the application along with any changes to the statement.  (Must have a minimum net worth of $100,000)
   
   
5. Business telephone in the auction company name (cellular telephones are not acceptable).
   
   
6. Local business tax license as required by local applicable law
   
   
7. Valid motor vehicle dealer license from the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission.

How do I renew a license?

Renewal applications are mailed 60 days prior to the expiration of your license. Submit the application to our office with the fee indicated on the form or use online renewal.

I let my license expire. How do I have it reinstated?

To renew your license within sixty (60) days from the date the license expired, you must submit proof that you have completed the required six (6) hours of continuing education in the last two (2) years; the renewal fee; and an additional $50 late fee.

To renew your license more than two (2) months but less than six (6) months from the date the license expired, you must submit a new application form; proof that you have completed the initial education required for licensure; the renewal fee; an additional $150 late fee; and proof that you have completed the required examination since the date the license expired.  Pursuant to Rule #0160-01-.22(4) - Requests to waive the retesting and education requirements must be submitted in writing with the required application and all fees before the Commission will consider the request.

To renew your license more than six (6) months but less than two (2) years from the date the license expired, you must submit a new application form; proof that you have completed the initial education required for licensure; the renewal fee; an additional $200 late fee; and proof that you have completed the required examination since the date the license expired.  Pursuant to Rule #0160-01-.22(4) - Requests to waive the retesting and education requirements must be submitted in writing with the required application and all fees before the Commission will consider the request.

A license renewed more than two (2) years from the date the license expired is treated as a new application.  You must meet all requirements including a new application form; proof that you have completed 80 hour initial education course; proof of thirty (30) hours of additional classroom instruction by an approved course provider; proof that you completed a two (2) year apprenticeship; proof that you have recently passed the required examination; and the license application fee.  Education and retesting requirements for licenses expired more than two (2) years cannot be waived.

How do I retire my license?

Submit a letter requesting that your license be retired, a fee of $150, and your current license.

Can I change my license to inactive status?

No.  You must voluntarily surrender your license, which would require a complete reapplication if you want to reactivate your license. You also may place your license in retirement to avoid re-examination.

Your complaint will be processed by our complaint coordinator who will forward a copy to the company for their response.  The response will reviewed to determine if further investigation or disciplinary action by the Commission may be necessary.
