Teaching Literacy in Tennessee
Literacy instruction is, and has been, a top priority for teachers and schools across Tennessee. Last year, the department published the Vision for Third Grade Reading Proficiency as a first step toward defining what proficiency looks like for students in the early grades and beyond.
In May 2017, the department released a practical guidance document called Teaching Literacy in Tennessee, which serves as the department’s “how” resource for teaching literacy. The early learning team will be hosting a series of summer learning opportunities on the topics listed below. We encourage pre-K through fourth grade educators to attend, including ESL and special educators.

Framework and Unit Starter Regional Convenings
Teachers, coaches, and building leaders are invited to come together on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 4–5 p.m. local time in each CORE region to learn more about the framework for Teaching Literacy in Tennessee and related unit starter resources. These optional unit starters are anchored in concepts from the content area standards and incorporate the instructional practices from the Read to be Ready Coaching Network and Teaching Literacy in Tennessee. They include content goals for the unit, a list of texts to be used for various purposes in the English language arts block, a standards-aligned end-of-unit task, question sequences, and tasks to support approximately three weeks of literacy instruction.
A list of specific convening locations can be found here. Register by clicking here. Please contact R2BR.Coaching@tn.gov with questions.
