• Tennessee's State Employee Recycling Program Wins EPA Award

    STATE GOVERNMENT PARTNER OF THE YEAR AWARD RECOGNIZES SUCCESS IN WASTE REDUCTION

    Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) and the State Employee Recycling Program will receive a State Government Partner of the Year Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) later this month.The State Employee Recycling Program, coordinated by TDEC’s Office of Environmental Assistance, has received a WasteWise Partner of the Year Award from EPA the past four years and continues to expand its waste prevention and recycling efforts. With nearly 50,000 state employees participating, eight new locations were added in 2006 to the more than 50 buildings already taking part in the program.“I appreciate EPA’s recognition of the commitment our state employees have made to being good stewards of the environment,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “I hope employees in both the public and private sectors across Tennessee will continue to focus on waste reduction efforts and make a commitment to reduce, recycle and reuse to protect our natural resources for future generations.”

  • Cleveland Businessman Pleads Guilty To Sales Tax Fraud

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Today Jason Wade Lane, owner of Mattress Direct, located at 4633 North Lee Highway in Cleveland, pled guilty to 11 counts of sales tax fraud, a violation of Tenn. Code Ann. Section 67-1-1440(g). The Tennessee Department of Revenue’s Special Investigations Section conducted the investigation leading to today’s guilty plea by Lane, age 26.

  • Former Memphis Business Owner Convicted On Sales Tax Evasion Charges

    ANTHONY RAY VAUGHN PLEADS GUILTY TO SALES TAX EVASION CHARGES

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Anthony Ray Vaughn, former owner of Hickory Hill Wine & Spirits located at 6326 Winchester Rd. in Memphis, Tenn., pled guilty to one Class E Felony count of sales tax evasion, a violation of Tenn. Code Ann. Section 67-1-1440(d), and one Class C Felony count of theft of property over $10,000, a violation of Tenn. Code Ann. Section 39-14-103. The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation covering the 54-month period from Aug. 1, 1999, through Jan. 1, 2004, that led to yesterday’s conviction of Vaughn, age 49.

    “This conviction underscores that sales tax is a ‘trust tax’ to which retailers have no legal entitlement,” said Commissioner Loren L. Chumley. “Consumers pay the tax with the belief the money will be used by the state and local governments for the common good.”
