Weekly Certification

What is a weekly certification?
As a claimant for unemployment insurance, you must complete weekly certifications beginning the week after you file your claim for benefits. The weekly certification is a set of eligibility questions.   When answered correctly benefits are paid, provided the claim has been approved.

To certify you must establish a Personal Identification Number (PIN)
If you filed your claim online, you will establish a PIN at the end of the filing process. If you filed your claim by telephone, you will set up a PIN the first time you make your weekly certification.

Note: When certifying by telephone for the first time, the voice prompt will ask you to enter your PIN. At this point you will create a PIN that is easy to remember. You will not be able to certify or receive benefits without this PIN.

There are two ways to certify
You can certify either through the Internet at (click on “Weekly Certification” in the menu) or by calling (615)532-1800 (Nashville), 800-689-9799 (toll-free in TN), or 800-262-8094 (outside TN).  You must certify each week while you are unemployed, starting with the week after you file your claim for benefits.

Weekly certification hours of availability on the Internet
Sunday, 8:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M., Central Time
Monday, 7:00 A.M. until 6:30 P.M., Central Time
Weekly certification hours of availability by phone through TIPS line
Sunday, 8:00 A.M. until 12:00 A.M.
Monday through Friday, 7:00 A.M. until 12:00 A.M.

What action do I take if I’m told my PIN is locked?
You will not have to talk with a person to reset your PIN if you complete the next certification by telephone.

Nashville – (615) 532-1800
Other TN areas – 1-800-689-9799
Out of state – 1-800-262-8094

You will be asked to enter your social security number, a 4-digit number that you would like as your PIN and to enter it again. You will then be asked to answer a security question so that you will be able to reset your PIN in the future.

Subsequent certifications may be completed by telephone or online.

Read these questions before you certify the first time
Become familiar with the questions listed in step #7 in the “Guide for Receiving U.I. Benefits,” as they are the questions you will answer each week during certification.

How do I stop my benefits?
You need to stop certifying when you begin earning wages - not when you receive your first paycheck. This will stop your benefits.
