GRANTS AVAILABLE TO ENHANCE ENGLISH LITERACY AND CIVICS EDUCATION
FEDERAL FUNDS FOR SERVICES TO IMMIGRANTS AND LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENT

NASHVILLE―The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Division of Adult Education announces the availability of special resources to enhance English literacy and civics education services to immigrants and other limited English proficient populations. The funds for this grant are allocated to the Division of Adult Education by the United States Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education.

Contingent upon funding, nine new grants will be awarded on a competitive basis for eligible providers in Tennessee. Eligible providers include local adult education programs, local education agencies, community-based organizations of demonstrated effectiveness, volunteer literacy organizations of demonstrated effectiveness, institutions of higher education, public or private non-profit agencies, libraries, public housing authorities, a non-profit institution not described above with the ability to provide literacy services to adults and families, or a consortium of any of the previously listed agencies or organizations.

The deadline for submitting a proposal is June 23, 2006. A proposal packet is available on the Division of Adult Education webpage http://www.state.tn.us/labor-wfd/AE/ or a copy will be mailed upon request by calling 615-741-7054 or 1-800-531-1515 and asking for an EL/Civics Proposal Packet.
