January County Unemployment Rates
Rates show increases in 50 counties

NASHVILLE - Tennessee's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January 2004 of 4.9 percent, down from the December revised rate of 6.0 percent, was released on March 4, 2004. County non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for January 2004, released today, show that 50 counties increased, 36 counties decreased, and nine remained the same.

Knox County registered the state's lowest county unemployment rate at 2.7 percent, down from 2.9 in December. Clay County's rate of 14.9 percent, down from 15.1 in December, was the state's highest.

Following Knox County in the metropolitan counties with the lowest rate was Davidson, at 4.0 percent, down from 4.4 in December. Hamilton County was 4.1, up from 3.9. Shelby County was 6.0 percent, down from 6.3.
