GRANT INCREASES NUMBER OF GED DIPLOMAS STATEWIDE
INCREASES RANGE FROM 20 TO MORE THAN 50 PERCENT ACROSS STATE

NASHVILLE - NASHVILLE-The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley announces a 37 percent increase in GED's statewide due directly to special grant funding to increase the number of GED diplomas. A total of 11,933 GED diplomas were issued in fiscal year 2004-05. Twenty four local programs increased the number of GED diplomas by 50 percent or higher in their communities. Those programs received additional incentive funding for 2005-06 fiscal year.

In January of this year approximately $1 million dollars from federal incentive grant funds was awarded to Tennessee to pay for the costs of General Educational Development (GED) test fees and to add more GED classes throughout the state.

Last year, results from student focus groups showed the GED test fee is an obstacle for many individuals who have studied and are prepared to pass the exam, but who cannot pay the $50-$65 test fee. Additionally there are many individuals who have not attended an adult education class at all because the test fee is prohibitive or classes are limited due to funding.

"I am proud of our 54 Adult Education programs across the state that met or exceeded the goal of a 20 percent increase between January and June of this year," said Commissioner Neeley. "This higher than anticipated increase shows us we can educate more adults by paying the test fee and providing more instructional hours. These incentive funds are imperative in improving the overall economy of our state."

"Never before in the history of Adult Education has an administration offered this kind of support and opportunity for those individuals who want to pass the GED exam," said Phil White, Administrator of the Division of Adult Education. "Our AE programs across the state have worked diligently to increase their numbers and in turn improve the lives of many individuals in their communities.

" A list of those programs that exceeded their goals and were awarded the Commissioner's Award of Excellence is attached. For Adult Education Programs across the state and more information on the GED test go to www.gednow.info.
