GOVERNOR BREDESEN PROCLAIMS EMPLOY OLDER WORKERS WEEK
TENNESSEE CAREER CENTERS TO HOLD OPEN HOUSES SEPTEMBER 29

NASHVILLE — Governor Phil Bredesen has proclaimed September 24-30 “Employ Older Workers Week.” Tennessee Career Centers across the state will host an older workers open house on Friday, September 29, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Workers age 40 and beyond will get a tour of the Tennessee Career Centers and learn about the services offered.

“I am pleased to dedicate this week to our older workers. Their talent and energy have helped strengthen Tennessee’s families and communities, and I invite all Tennesseans to join me in honoring this group,” Bredesen said. “The open houses at the Tennessee Career Centers across the state are a wonderful opportunity for older workers and employers to connect. I encourage all Tennesseans to take advantage of these resources.”

“When we help the baby boomer generation with employment, the needs of employers are also benefited,” said Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley. “Last year we successfully connected many workers with employers at our open houses across the sate. Many of those older workers and employers are still working together today.”

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development also offers a senior friendly Web site at www.tennessee.gov/labor-wfd/boomer. The Web site offers baby boomers age 40 and beyond information on Tennessee job search, career transition, guidance on education and training, résumé writing, and career counseling at the Tennessee One Stop Career Centers. The site goes one step further in assisting the boomer generation with links to resources that can help them remove obstacles in their job search such as caring for an older family member.

Approximately 25 Tennessee Career Centers are participating in the “Employ Older Workers Week” open house on September 29 from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
