GOVERNOR AWARDS TRAINING GRANTS TO COOKEVILLE EMPLOYERS
$31,298 TO SATELLITE MED AND $17,590 TO PHOENIX USA, INC.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have awarded $31,298 to Satellite Med and $17,590 to Phoenix USA, Inc., both of Putnam County. The grants will assist Satellite Med with training 52 employees in lean healthcare fundamentals and technologies, leadership development and operating systems management.  In addition, Phoenix USA, Inc. will train 29 employees in core skills customer service development and quality and continuous improvements.

"It is vital for Tennessee workers to continually train and upgrade their skills so our state can remain economically competitive," said Governor Bredesen.  "Once the employees of these companies complete this valuable training it will help these businesses become more productive.”

 “I am proud to award this grant money to help train workers in Putnam County,” said Commissioner Neeley.  “Since July 1, 2007, the Workforce Development Division has obligated $1.5 million to Tennessee companies, training more than 5,000 workers.”

“Training grants keep companies competitive and profitable,” said Senator Charlotte Burks.“  I applaud the Governor for awarding these grants to these Putnam County employers and helping to improve our economy.”

“I commend the Governor and Commissioner for helping Tennessee companies with training grants,” said Representative Henry Fincher. 

“This type of training helps companies become more effective,” said Representative Charles Curtiss.  “This is an integral part of job development in our state.”

The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency was instrumental in awarding the grants to Satellite Med and Phoenix USA, Inc.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development administers the Incumbent Worker Training program.  The program has been structured to be flexible to meet the business's training objectives.  The business may use public, private, or its own in-house training provider based on the nature of the training.

The following criteria must be met to qualify for the Incumbent Worker Training Program. Employers must be in operation in Tennessee for at least one year prior to application date.  Employers must have at least five full-time employees, demonstrate financial viability and be current on all state tax obligations.  Funding priority is given to businesses whose grant proposals represent a significant layoff avoidance strategy and represent a significant upgrade of skills.
