NASHVILLE —Governor Phil Bredesen has proclaimed September 18-24 “Employ Older Workers Week” in Tennessee. Tennessee Career Centers across the state will host an older workers open house on Friday, September 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Workers age 40 and beyond will get a tour of the Tennessee Career Centers and learn about the services offered. Visitors will also get their first online visit to the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development’s new Boomer Careers Web site to assist older workers with employment information.

“I am pleased to dedicate this week to our older workers. Their talent and energy have helped strengthen Tennessee’s families and communities, and I invite all Tennesseans to join me in honoring this group,” Bredesen said. “This new Web site enhances the work we do at Tennessee Career Centers to help our seniors, as valued members of our state’s workforce, to make the career and lifestyle changes they desire. I encourage all Tennesseans to take advantage of these resources.”

“We created this Web site as a self-service tool to disseminate vital information in an easily accessible format,” said Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley. “When we help the baby boomer generation with employment, the needs of employers are also benefited. Baby boomers offer employers a more mature and flexible workforce.”

The Web site offers baby boomers age 40 and beyond information on Tennessee job search, career transition, guidance on education and training, résumé writing, and career counseling at the Tennessee One Stop Career Centers. The site goes one step further in assisting the boomer generation with links to resources that can help them remove obstacles in their job search such as caring for an older family member.
