Procedures for Becoming a Licensed Child Care Agency


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  1. Attend orientation. Find locations here.
  2. To proceed after orientation, you must obtain a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)
  3. Schedule an onsite visit with your assigned Child Care Program Evaluator:
    • To verify that the facility contains no apparent hazards inside or outside
    • To verify that the facility is appropriate for group care
    • To draft a floor plan with dimensions and take photos
  4. Complete an application and submit appropriate fee (Non-refundable). The fee must be in the form of a money order or cashier's check made out to the Treasurer, State of Tennessee.  You must submit the following with your application: 
    • Proof of Education
    • Proof of Experience
    • Three non-related references
  5. Evaluation by Environmental and Fire/Safety inspectors.
  6. Complete and sign Criminal History Disclosure form*
  7. Schedule and submit a fingerprint sample for a criminal background check/state administrative registry review. Excludable offenses:
    • Offenses of physical abuse, sexual abuse or neglect of a child
    • Offenses involving drugs
    • Offenses involving violence against a child or person
  8. Upon demonstration of compliance of all laws and regulations governing the specific type of child care agency and if the applicant has satisfactorily met the requirements, the Department shall issue a temporary license.

* All persons applying to work with children as an employee, director or manager with a child care agency are required to complete a criminal background check before beginning to serve in that role. (Tenn. Code Ann. §71-3-507) The Department is also required to check an individual’s status on the Department of Health’s Vulnerable Persons Registry (VPR), the Department of Children’s Services abuse registry and the State’s Sex Offender registry.
