2016 Tennessee Breastfeeding Events

On August 6, 2011, the United States Breastfeeding Committee declared August as National Breastfeeding Month.  In celebration of National Breastfeeding Month, the Tennessee Department of Health highlighted various breastfeeding activities occurring across the state.  We collected events and activities for the entire month of August as well as:
 
World Breastfeeding Week (August 1st thru 7th, 2016):  This year's theme for World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) was "Breastfeeding:  A Key to Sustainable Development".  TDH dedicated World Breastfeeding Week to assert the importance of increasing and sustaining the promotion and support of breastfeeding.     
 
The Big Latch On (August 5th and August 6th​, 2016):  The Global Big Latch On takes place annually over two days during World Breastfeeding Week to strengthen national and global support for breastfeeding and to improve the health of children and women around the world.   
 
 
All 95 counties submitted a total of 125 events (including informational displays) during August!
  • 27 counties held 31 events during the first week of August (World Breastfeeding Week)
  • 24 counties celebrated The Big Latch On
  • 28 counties held 41 events during the rest of August for National Breastfeeding Month
  • 28 counties displayed information to celebrate, promote, and support breastfeeding within their local health department(s)
We will continue to help mothers and their families increase the duration of breastfeeding and demonstrate our community support!
