National Breastfeeding Month 2017

In 2011, the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) declared August as National Breastfeeding Month (view the USBC proclamation here).  According to the 2015/2016 National Immunization Survey (NIS) breastfeeding data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

Breastfeeding Celebrations

Tennessee celebrated National Breastfeeding Month with various activities statewide!  We kicked off August with World Breastfeeding Week from August 1st to 7th and the Global Big Latch On August 4th and 5th.   Events continued throughout August and wrapped up with Black Breastfeeding Week from August 25th to 31st!

World Breastfeeding Week -  The theme for World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) 2017 was "Sustaining Breastfeeding Together".  For more information about World Breastfeeding Week, visit their website and Facebook pages.


Global Big Latch On - The Global Big Latch On takes place annually over two days during World Breastfeeding Week to strengthen national and global support for breastfeeding and to improve the health of children and women around the world.  In 2017, Tennessee had 16 counties participate in the Big Latch On with more than 600 babies latched simultaneously!  For more information about the Global Big Latch On, visit their website and Facebook pages.

Black Breastfeeding Week - Black Breastfeeding Week strives to highlight and celebrate African-American breastfeeding mothers and professionals  and bring awareness to lingering racial disparity in breastfeeding within communities.   According to the CDC, 85.7% of white women had ever breastfed compared to 68% of black women.  In Tennessee, breastfeeding initiation for white infants was 22% higher than black infants in 2015.  Black Breastfeeding Week 2017 theme encouraged you to Bet on Black and Lift Every Baby.  For more information, visit their website and Facebook pages.

2017 Tennessee Breastfeeding Events

The Tennessee Department of Health highlighted various breastfeeding events and activities occurring across the state for the entire month.  Out of Tennessee's 95 counties, 92 submitted a total of 128 breastfeeding events during National Breastfeeding Month. 

  • 16 counties are celebrated The Global Big Latch On
  • 42 counties had events during World Breastfeeding Week, including informational displays and bulletin boards
  • 45 counties had events during National Breastfeeding Month, including informational displays and bulletin boards
