The report includes information on the health care received by Tennesseans with diabetes and hypertension. It shows whether the patients received evidence-based care, whether they were able to control their diseases, and whether they went to the hospital because of avoidable complications from their disease.
For the first time, much of this information is available at a county level. This report marks first time that information from major insurers across the state has been combined for a public report. The report is a first step to test what information is available and how it can be gathered and analyzed.
While this report does not tell us why some counties do better on these measures, it does point out that there is unwarranted variation in the quality of healthcare that is provided in Tennessee. Plans call for investigation into why Tennessee experiences these healthcare quality variations. Once we learn the reasons for the variation, future versions of this report will have more information for improving care for diabetes, hypertension, and other areas of health care.
