About Air Quality Forecasts
Meteorologists in the department’s Division of Air Pollution Control have been forecasting air quality since 2001 to inform communities about the condition of their air and its potential impact on public health.

Forecasting air quality works much like forecasting weather. Critical meteorological information and current air quality measurements are entered into computer models to predict an Air Quality Index (AQI) for the following day. The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or polluted your air is, and what associated health concerns you should be aware of.  Since ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels present the greatest threat to air quality for our state, measurement of these contaminants determine the AQI for forecast areas in Tennessee. When the AQI is forecast to be 101 or above for a region, then that area will have an Air Quality Alert or Action Day.  Individuals in an area with an Air Quality Alert are encouraged to do things that help air quality stay below the forecast level.

The Department of Environment and Conservation partners with U.S. Environmental Protection to provide the EnviroFlash message system that sends Air Quality Alert information to subscribers via email or cell phone and posts to the department’s Website
