TN Air Quality Forecast offers current air quality forecasts from TDEC meteorologists.

About TN Air Quality Forecasts: Protecting and improving air quality is important to our health and a responsibility each of us should take very seriously.  Meteorologists in the department’s Division of Air Pollution Control have been forecasting air quality since 2001 to inform communities about the condition of their air and its potential impact on public health.

Forecasting air quality works much like forecasting weather.  Critical meteorological information and current air quality measurements are entered into computer models to predict an air quality index (AQI) for the following day.  The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or polluted your air is, and what associated health concerns you should be aware of.  Since ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels present the greatest threat to air quality in this area, measurement of these contaminants determine the AQI for forecast areas in Tennessee.  If the AQI is forecasted to be 101 or above then that area will have an Action day or Air Alert, which means everyone participating will do things to help the air quality stay below the forecasted level.

Air Quality forecasts are produced for the following areas:

Chattanooga region
Clarksville
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Knoxville
Memphis
Nashville
Tri-Cities

The most current Air Quality forecasts are on the department’s Web site.

The Tennessee Pollution Prevention Partnership or TP3, is a network of Tennessee households, schools, government agencies, organizations, businesses, and industries that demonstrate pollution prevention protects the environment, saves money, and improves communities.
