In operation for two decades, the State Employee Recycling Program operates collection services for State offices across the Tennessee, providing recycling opportunities to more than 32,000 employees. From January 1, 1990 to June 30, 2011, State employees recycled 17,962 tons of mixed office paper, generating $207,156 in revenue and avoiding approximately $538,866 in landfill costs.
FY 2010-2011 Activities
Leading by example, a Green Cubicle located at TDEC headquarters provides numerous recycling and reuse opportunities including collection boxes for rechargeable batteries, ink jet cartridges, a book exchange, and a reuse area.
The SERP also sponsors several events throughout the year to highlight the importance of reuse and recycling in protecting our environment and improving our communities, including America Recycles Day, the Great America Cleanup, as well as charity drives. Since 1990, our drives have collected a more than 50,000 pounds of clothing and 1,000 pairs of shoes.
The SERP collected 68.03 tons of paper per month from State offices, generating approximately $785.00 in monthly revenue. Additionally, the SERP provided a cost savings of over $2041.00 each month in landfill disposal costs plus the expenses related to hauling and dumpster rental. Revenue is reinvested to expand the program to include more commodities in more locations. Beverage container recycling is one example of continual improvement. Employees recycled 34,114 pounds of aluminum cans and plastic bottles, nearly 7,184 more pounds than FY 09-10.
