Governor Bredesen has proclaimed the week beginning September 14, 2009 Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week.

I would like to encourage all stakeholders to take the time to recognize these individuals who provide the essential supports that enable individuals with disabilities to live meaningful and productive lives.

People with Intellectual Disabilities have a right to healthy, secure and meaningful lives surrounded by family and friends.  The leadership and staff at the Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (DIDD) are aware that it is the commitment and compassion of the direct support professionals across the state that help keep an individual with disabilities connected to their family and community.

Thank you to all the direct support workers, direct care workers, personal assistants, personal attendants, in-home support workers and paraprofessionals who contribute to improving the quality of life to Tennessee’s most vulnerable citizens.

Stephen H. Norris, Deputy Commissioner
Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
