Direct Support Professionals are a critical component of the services the Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities provides and funds for persons with intellectual disabilities. So critical, in fact, that I consider Direct Support Professionals to be the "backbone" of our program system because of their significance in direct service, modeling and providing for the welfare and wellbeing of the many persons served. It is very fitting that there is a national Direct Support Professional Appreciation Week and it is a privilege to be a part of this celebration and recognition. To all Direct Support Professionals, I extend a hearty thanks and appreciation for the excellent work that is accomplished. As I have traveled around the State and had opportunities to meet many Direct Support Professionals, their defining their work as "a labor of love and respect" rings true in my observations and interactions with them and the people they support. Thank you for all you do, Direct Support Professionals, to enhance the quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities.
