4. Is testing required?
No, this is a non-civil service job.
5. Do I have to have the CPA?
No.
6. How long do I have to complete the CPA?
There is no time limit.
Working for the Department of Audit
1. What kind of training is provided?
On-the-job training is the principle method of training all new auditors. In addition, you will also attend classes on Working papers Techniques, Understanding the Audit process, Excel, Using Teammate, etc. 40 hours of in-house training is provided to all employees each year. 40 hours of outside professional CPE training is provided to all CPAs each year.
2. Will I have to travel?
There is 50% overnight and out-of-town travel requirement for State Audit.
3. What is a typical workweek like?
Your workweek could vary. You could be in-town on an audit or you may be out of town. Also, you may be preparing for the audit which involves reviewing previous working papers. Then, you may travel to the audit site and evaluating all evidence obtained during the audit process.
4. Will I work alone or on a team?
You will work with a team, and there will be an in-charge who will train you during the audit.
5. What is the dress code?
Two of our audit divisions have business casual policies. In the Division of State Audit, the dress code is business casual Monday through Friday unless otherwise stated, and County Audit has business casual on Fridays.
6. What kind of hours will I work?
State employees work 37.5 hours per week. The normal working hours are 8-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday; however, many of our divisions have adopted a flexible work schedule. Employees may select a work schedule that allows them to work anytime between 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during a one week or two week period.
7. Are there opportunities for advancement?
Legislative Auditor 1s are eligible for Auditor 2 after one year, and an Auditor 2 may advance to an Auditor 3. However, an Auditor 3 must have the CPA before being promoted to an Auditor 4. From there, if there are promotional opportunities, you could be promoted to Audit Manager, Assistant Director, and then up to Director.
8. What about compensation?
There is an annual general increase that is subject to legislative approval, and there are additional increases that may be received for obtaining professional designations such as the CPA and the CISA. |
