Course Name RECRUIT / FIREFIGHTER I

Course Description This ten-week program is designed to take the student from pre-service entry level to Firefighter I and covers all aspects of firefighting based on NFPA 1001: Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, with the exception of emergency medical training. The student will participate in classroom instruction, nighttime response exercises and practical skills training including “live” fire scenarios. At the end of the last week, eligible students may take the Tennessee Commission on Firefighting Personnel and Standard Education certification exam for Firefighter I.

Course Materials
  • IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting (5th edition) Student manual and workbook
  • Five (5) navy or dark blue t-shirts (considered part of daily uniform)
  • One (1) fire department style uniform shirt
  • Five (5) navy blue long pants (considered part of daily uniform)
  • Two (2) long sleeve uniform/work shirts
  • Navy blue work out clothes (sweat shirt, sweat pants, shorts)
  • Athletic shoes suitable for running and calisthenics
  • PPE- bunker pants, coat, boots, gloves, helmet, and protective hood.  All PPE items must meet NFPA 1971, Protective Ensemble for Structural Firefighting.
  • SCBA with PASS devise and spare cylinder– must meet NFPA 1981, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA bottle must be in current hydrostatic test date.  Testing five years for steel; three years for composite) ALL items MUST be in good condition - no tears and must be loose fit
  • 2-inch 3 ring binder (which includes a minimum 100 sheets of paper)
  • Pencils

  • Highlighter

This course requires a high degree of physical fitness and the ability to cope with physically and mentally demanding situations.
