| Course Description |
Open Enrollment applies to the Recruit/Firefighter I course and is available to persons
wishing to seek a career in firefighting but not currently affiliated with a fire
department. Students must meet requirements as set forth in a pre-confirmation
packet, which is available through the Academy. Students participating in this
program are eligible to take the Tennessee Commission on Firefighting Personnel
and Standard Education certification exam for Firefighter I. This course does not
guarantee employment. |

Once a registration confirmation is received by TFACA and you are contacted, you are required to make an appointment for pre-entry qualification with a 2-week time period before start of course. You must pass the entrance requirements per NFPA Physical Fitness Requirements for Entry Level Personnel. You must also have completed and provide the following at the pre-entry appointment:
- Copy of TN Drivers License
- TFACA Waiver of Liability
- TBI Background Check
- Medical Release signed by physician
- Copy of High School Diploma or GED
You must also bring:
- IFSTA Essentials Fundamentals of Firefighting (5th edition) Student manual and workbook
- 2-inch 3 ring binder (which includes a minimum 100 sheets of paper)
- Pencils
- Pens
- Highlighter
You must also provide (rental of equipment available at TFACA):
- PPE- bunker pants, coat, boots, gloves, helmet, and protective hood. All PPE items must meet NFPA 1971, Protective Ensemble for Structural Firefighting.
- SCBA with PASS devise and spare cylinder – must meet NFPA 1981, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA bottle must be in current hydrostatic test date. Testing five years for steel; three years for composite) ALL items MUST be in good condition - no tears and must be loose fit
Additional required items:
Daily Classroom Uniform:
- Navy blue twill work pants
- Navy blue twill work shirt
- Navy blue tee-shirt
- Black plain toe shoe or boot
PT Uniform:
- Gym shorts
- T-shirt
- Athletic shoes suitable for running and calisthenics
- Sweat pants and shirts are optional
