Who is required to be registered?

A person who buys, exchanges, or deals in scrap metal, or an employee or agent of that dealer who has the express or implied authority to buy, exchange or deal in scrap metal on behalf of the dealer

How do I obtain a registration?

Submit a complete application accompanied by a non-refundable fee of $175.

There are no reciprocal agreements with any other states.

How do I renew a registration?

A renewal application will be mailed to each registered dealer approximately 60 days prior to the registration’s expiration date.  You may renew online or submit the application to our office with the fee amount indicated on the form.

How far in advance of expiration date should my renewal be completed?

Renewal applications are mailed 60 days prior to the expiration of your registration. It must be postmarked and returned to our office no later than the date of expiration.

I let my registration expire. How do I have it reinstated?

If a registration is not renewed prior to expiration, a new application is required.

How do I retire my registration?

There are no statutory provisions for retiring a scrap metal dealer registration.

How do I withdraw my registration?

A registration may be “withdrawn” by mailing the registration, (wall certificate) along with the completed “withdrawal” form found on this site under “forms and downloads.”

Can I change my registration to inactive status?

A registration cannot be changed to inactive status.  A registration may be withdrawn. Withdrawal forms are found on the Web site. To withdraw a registration, mail the registration (wall certificate) and completed withdrawal form to the address on the top of the form.  No fee is required.

How do I reactivate a withdrawn registration?

A new application must be filed along with registration fee.

I recently updated my status. Why hasn’t my status changed online?

Your status will change online the business day after it is processed and approved by our office.

Am I required to notify the department if I change my address?

Yes, a request to change the address on a certificate shall be accompanied by a non-refundable $10 fee.

Can I change my information online?

You are eligible to change your address when renewing online. Changing your address between renewals require a $10 fee and completed change-of-address form.

How do I determine if an individual/company is registered?

License Search is available online. (Spelling and punctuation must be exact)

Am I required to notify the board if I change employers?

No, as long as you are registered as a scrap metal dealer you may work for any scrap metal employer in Tennessee without reapplying.

Forms and are available online. Hard copies of forms can be requested by email or phone (615 741-1741).

How do I know when and where the program meets?

The Scrap Metal Registration Program does not have appointed members.  If a special meeting is required, a notice will be posted on our Web site.
