FF136 Arson Detection for the First Responder

Overview

This course is designed to enable the student to recognize the indicators of an intentionally set fire, preserve evidence, report the information to the appropriate office, know the role of a first responder, and that the role is not to determine cause and origin of the fire. Major topics include fire behavior, critical observations of the first responder, fire cause, scene security and evidence preservation, legal consideration, and reporting of findings.

Course Objectives

  • Students will recognize as first responders the indicators of an intentionally set fire, preserve evidence, and report the information to appropriate officials.
  • Students will define clearly the role of the first responder and understand that the first responder’s role is not to determine the origin or cause of the fire and that he/she is not responsible as an investigator.
